"The epic battle of Gallipoli began today in 1915, as French and British warships attacked Turkish positions before amphibious landings. What happened next constitutes one the First World War's most notorious disasters as, for almost a year, Allied troops attempted to get off the peninsula and begin an advance on Istanbul. The end result was stalemate and, sadly, around 500,000 deaths. One of the proudest fighting units of the battle were the ANZAC (Australian and New Zealand) forces."
