Time to Move on Judges

By Terry Eastland
Beyond The News

Republicans hold the Senate. So they are responsible for the confirmation of judges. But the process is going slow--much too slow.

Yes, during his tenure, President Bush has appointed 182 district judges and 42 circuit judges, in addition to his two Supreme Court justices. But there are 32 nominations now pending in the Senate--and 11 for the critical circuit courts.

They deserve an up-or-down vote--except in the case of a nominee who has no chance of winning a majority's approval. But there is no nominee facing that prospect. Instead, there are nominees opposed by a few to a few dozen senators.

Republicans should move the languishing nominations to a floor vote while they still have a majority of 55. What is needed here is firm resolve and indeed action on the part of the Senate Republican leadership--and of course the Majority Leader, Bill Frist.
