A Word from Our Founding Fathers – Taxes

Americans are overtaxed and under-informed.

By Herman Cain
National Chairman, Free Market Project

We must never forget what drove our nation’s founders toward fighting for independence. The men who declared, fought for and secured our freedoms were responding to horrible abuses of power from a distant capital. Textbooks brim with stories of the many colonial complaints, but much of what Americans were upset about can be summed up in one word.

Taxes.

  • Yes, not just where the money is going but where it is coming from. That is why the Left opposes any new tax system such as the Fair tax, a flat tax or a consumer tax. All of those would make it perfectly clear to everyone exactly where the money is really coming from and who is paying it, i.e. we (all of) the people. With the current system, they can play the game of; ‘don’t tax me, don’t tax thee, tax that guy under the tree’. ‘Don’t worry about our extravagant spending, we’ll make the other guy pay for it and you will be the beneficiary’.

Of course it is not true, the middle class pays most of the taxes because, by virtue of their numbers, they have most of the money. Even if it were true, it would not be good because it is ‘the rich guys’ money that fuels economic expansion and generates new jobs.

I just heard of a school system in Connecticut where a 7th grade teacher distributes coins on the classroom floor and has all of the pupils scramble to get it. Then they all count up how much they got and the teacher uses those results to demonstrate the inequity of capitalism. Those who got a lot are like the evil rich people who got their money by aggressively exploiting the poor people. A zero sum game. No mention of hard work resulting in more reward. No mention of what then happens to the money. No mention of where the money came from in the first place. No mention of how money is just a representation of unconsumed production. Just ‘lottery of life’ and class warfare nonsense.

  • It is a shame what some of these teachers are 'teaching' the children at school. As you point out, there is no context of where the money came from in the first place that they are scrambling after.

As in real life, it just 'falls from the sky' and some are just luckier than others in accumulating their riches.

Ironically enough, what this lefty teacher has done, is just describe the likes of Ted Kennedy, who did nothing to attain his wealth; who has done nothing to share his wealth; complains about tax cuts for the wealthy; complains about excess corporate profits; complains about tax loopholes; and then benefits from offshore estate holdings so he can avoid paying taxes.

And sadly, this 'teacher' does not even realize this great lesson of legal tax avoidance demonstrated by this 'great' lefty politician which could have been shared with his/her students.
