Mass. Governor Wants State Troopers to Arrest Illegals

Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney wants the federal government to give his state troopers the authority to arrest illegal aliens solely on the basis of their immigration status. "It's one more thing you can do to make this a less attractive place for illegal aliens to come to work," the Boston Globe quoted Romney as saying. Right now, Massachusetts troopers can't arrest people just for being in the country illegally, unless federal immigration officials give them permission to do so. Romney says state troopers who stop illegals for routine traffic violations, for example, should be allowed to detain them without first getting federal permission. The Boston Globe said the arrangement would be controversial in cities like Cambridge, which has declared itself a sanctuary for immigrants. Read on.
