Hamas was created as an offshoot of the Brotherhood in Egypt. Egyptian Brotherhood leader Mahdi Akif has been serving the past few years as a de facto spiritual leader of Hamas, ever since Israel assassinated Hamas spiritual leader Ahmed Yassin in March 2004."
