All Eyes on Lieberman

By Hugh Hewitt

"All eyes are on or at least ought to be on Connecticut today, specifically the Democratic primary for the Senate seat currently held by Joe Lieberman, who is being challenged by Ned Lamont the wealthy champion of the left-wing of the party--the "netroots" as they're now called. Fueled primarily by rage against Lieberman's vote for and continued support of the war in Iraq, Lamont has seen his lead fall in recent days. But if he holds on and forges a win, a shudder will course through the entire party.

No less an expert on Democratic politics than Martin Peretz, long time editor-in-chief of the New Republic, predicts that a Lamont victory will begin a long run of power for the hard left within the Democratic Party. On Sunday, ABC analyst Cokie Roberts said a Lamont win would be a disaster for the Democrats.

Connecticut is center stage in a great political drama. A Lamont win in Connecticut today is a message to the entire nation that the party of FDR, Truman and JFK is no more."
