A Far Cry From the Party of FDR

"Listen to Michigan Democratic Congressman John Dingell on Detroit television recently: 'I don't take sides for or against Hezbollah; I don't take sides for or against Israel.' John Dingell is not a marginal figure. He is among the most senior Democrats and, if Democrats regain a majority in the House, he'll regain his chairmanship of the powerful Energy and Commerce Committee.
Another Democrat, Lynne Woolsey of California, has gathered 22 co-sponsors among her party's members for her 'Iraq War Powers Repeal Act of 2006,' a bill that would brand the American effort on behalf of the new Iraqi government as an occupation--and declare the war over.
On the last day of July, the senior Democratic leadership of both House and Senate declared unity on the position of a quick exit from Iraq, thus making November's elections a referendum on cutting and running. Whatever the Democrats have become, it is a far cry from the party of FDR, Truman and JFK. If they win in November, the United States will lose the war."
