Calif. sues 6 carmakers in global warming suit

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - "California filed a global warming lawsuit on Wednesday against Ford Motor Co., General Motors Corp., Toyota Motor Corp. and three other automakers, charging that greenhouse gases from their vehicles have cost the state millions of dollars.

State Attorney General Bill Lockyer said the lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Northern California was the first of its kind to seek to hold manufacturers liable for the damages caused by their vehicles' emissions.

The lawsuit also names Chrysler Motors Corp., the U.S. arm of Germany's DaimlerChrysler, and the North American units of Honda Motor Co. and Nissan Motor Co. Ltd..

It also charges that vehicle emissions have contributed significantly to global warming and harmed the resources, infrastructure and environmental health of the most populous state in the United States." More info at Reuters.com.

  • I guess we should be grateful that such people do not believe in God, least they sue Him.

  • Well, if we can ever get them to believe that it is NOT man causing global warming, they may just try and sue Him.

  • I love it. California sets the vehicle emissions standards and then complains about the vehicles meeting them.
I hope the judge orders the state to pay all the legal fees of the defendants for such a stupid suit.

  • I made a point or a suggestion quite some time ago about maybe it's time to have lawyers who lose the case, pay all court and attorney fees.

This way a 'poor' person wouldn't be subject to the chilling effect of trying to bring a suit to the courts that may have good standing but a lack of resources.

Yet at the same time, people wouldn't be held hostage to legal threats and financial ruin by deep pocketed unscrupulous hacks that seek to destroy someone through the process and still lose (financially) even if they win by successfully defending themselves.
