DISPATCH FROM JERUSALEM: Bush speech seen as preparing for war with Iran

Joel Rosenberg writing on his blog, said he was given this sobering assessment by a senior Israeli political leader over a breakfast meeting:

“Our best case scenario is for missiles to be hitting us in the next year or two. Either the West goes to war to stop Iran from going nuclear, and Iran fires conventional missiles at us in retaliation, or the West waits too long and Iran launches a nuclear first strike at us. Either way, a terrible war is coming. It cannot be avoided.”

Now I am no geopolitical "expert", and I don't have inside contacts in Washington, nor in Israel for that matter, but this is indeed sobering, and quite frankly, seems like a very realistic assessment of Israel's plight given today's environment. I am not shocked at all. We should all be concerned about this possibility.

  • Not just the possibility but the probability!

The Left persists in characterizing this conflict as some sort of localized territorial dispute that can be negotiated in good faith. That the disputed territorial boundaries were established by their vaunted United Nations and that such a view therefore admits to U.N. failure seems not to deter them a bit.

This is an ideological dispute with the very religious fanaticism the Left so fears from Christians. We have nothing to bring to the negotiation table for which the other side will concede any of its stated goals. While it is true that war requires the participation of two sides, so to do negotiations. It is also true that only one side is required to reduce the other sides choices to either war or submission.

I fully expect that Israel will strike Iran before they judge Iran has nuclear weapons. They have no choice. I also believe that much of the world knows this as well. Most will publicly decry Israel’s actions but many will privately concede its inevitability and applaud it.

  • Yes, 'probability' would be more accurate.

I often reflect on the fact that the left's 'vaunted' UN, as you refer to it, established the boundaries with the intent of diminishing dispute and violence, and yet today, many on the left chide them for doing so.

One can only shake their head in bewilderment.

We seem to be ratcheting up the pressure on Iran, both verbally and through increased naval presence. Iran is acutely aware of this.

With only two more years left to go in the Bush administration, my guess is something will happen within two years.
