The Bush White House and a select group of senators have reached a prospective deal on immigration that could mean amnesty for millions of illegal aliens. This week, Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff stumped for the legislation. While acknowledging that there is a “fundamental unfairness” in a bill that allows illegal aliens to stay, Chertoff says he is unwilling to call for mass deportations. “We are bowing to reality,” Chertoff said.
