The Thought Crimes Bill of 2007
By David Davenport

"When former Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole frequently voted 'no' on new legislation, he explained: 'There are a lot of bad ideas in Washington and someone needs to stop them.'

Another of those bad ideas has surfaced and we need some courageous senators to stop it. The House recently passed the 'Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act,' which I would rename the 'Thought Crimes Bill.'

The bill makes it a felony to commit a crime with thoughts or motives spurred by the victim's gender, sexual orientation or gender identity.

It's not enough to punish the underlying crime, or to rely on hate-crime laws on the books in all 50 states, but now we need a federal law to punish thoughts and motives.

The president has promised a veto, but it shouldn't come to that. We need 50 senators to say 'no' to the Thought Crimes Bill of 2007."
