Bush Ally Howard Faces Uphill Re-Election Battle

Lagging in opinion polls behind a resurgent center-left opposition,conservative Australian Prime Minister John Howard has opened a six-week election campaign by announcing tax cuts and stressing to voters that he is a known quantity.

"Love me or loathe me, people know where I stand on all the major issues of importance," he told a press conference in Canberra as he announced that a federal election would be held on Nov. 24.
