Four French tourists shot dead in Mauritania

Telegraph.co.uk

Four French tourists have been shot dead in the West African country of Mauritania.

Five other people are reported to have been injured in the attack 160 miles east of the capital Nouakchott.

Local sources say the tour party was robbed at gunpoint after stopping for a roadside picnic.

An official from the French foreign ministry confirmed that four French nationals had died but provided no further details about the incident.

The country, officially known as the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, is a former French colony.

The nation of around three million people is mostly peaceful but its eastern and northern Saharan extremities are poorly policed and frequented by drug and arms traffickers.
