The Luxury of Political Fatigue
"Americans are showing signs of political fatigue already--and we are in the earliest stages of voting in this presidential cycle. Some of this is understandable. After all, the campaigning has already gone on for over a year; the earliest start in American political history.
But we had better rethink the luxury of being tired of all this. Just think of what is going on in Pakistan, where Benazir Bhutto was assassinated in the midst of a political campaign. Pakistan, after all, has never had a constitutional change in presidential leadership in its 60-year history--not even once. Or think of Kenya, where dissatisfaction with election results has led to massacres. So much of the world looks to the American political process with a sense of admiration and longing.
Americans are not just observers in the dance of democracy--we are all participants. Let's take this responsibility with due seriousness, and with thankfulness for the stability of this great democracy."
