An Unfair Assault on Faith

By Michael Medved

The new movie "Religulous" features comedian Bill Maher arguing with believers to make them look stupid. The movie provides uneasy laughs--showing a Democratic, Bible-exploiting senator expressing gratitude that there's no IQ requirement for Congress. The cheap shots at organized faith, however, involve two areas of fundamental unfairness:

First, Maher selects easy, vulnerable targets, never confronting formidable religious intellects, like theologian Al Mohler.

Second, the movie concentrates on Christianity while giving a free pass to radical Islam, arguing that all religions equally threaten the destruction of civilization.

The concluding montage cuts together images of burning buildings on 9/11 with footage of Pope Benedict and devout Jews in prayer, thereby abandoning all claims of decency or seriousness.
