Israel's Finance Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gestures during a press conference.

Today in Jerusalem Benjamin Netanyahu stepped down as Israel's finance minister. In what is a last-minute protest against next week's Gaza pullout, his Cabinet colleagues were shocked by his announcement, but then forged ahead anyway, and gave the go-ahead to the first stage of the withdrawal plan moments after this development.

Netanyahu, the former prime minister, is considered to be a hard-liner and had aspirations to again become the prime minister of Israel by ousting Sharon. Netanyahu conceded that his stepping down will not stop the pullout. Regardless of this fact, he decided to resign anyway, saying that he is afraid the Gaza pullout will turn Gaza into a base of Islamic terror and further endanger Israel.

The TimesOnLine has a story about it here.
