Executing Teachers Makes You a “Fighter”?

It’s a grim story: “5 Teachers Slain…Sought Out by Fighters.” From Baghdad, Sabrina Tavernise reported very un-emotionally: “Armed men dressed as police officers burst into a primary school in a town south of Baghdad on Monday, rounded up five Shiite teachers and their driver, marched them to an empty classroom and killed them, a police official said.” She also referred to them as “gunmen.” So how does this act make them “Fighters” to the headline writers? Shooting down unarmed teachers? Wouldn’t it suggest a better word would be “terrorists”? Or at least “assassins”? (The subhead does not appear in the online version.)

Gunfighters? They make it sound like the gunfight at OK Corral. These were teachers. They were murdered. Killed. Shot by terrorists. Got it?
