School Buses Not Good Enough

Many of us have seen by now, the media photos of all the school buses (well over 200 of them) sitting in a parking lot and under water. School buses and city buses were part of the comprehensive emergency plan to evacuate people. Yet these buses went unused, not moved to higher ground and ended up mostly under water. What happened? Why weren't they used? Well, mayor Nagin didn't think the buses were good enough. He demanded more comfortable Greyhound coaches instead.

"I need 500 buses, man," he told a radio station. "One of the briefings we had they were talking about getting, you know, public school bus drivers to come down here and bus people out of here."

Nagin responded:

"I'm like - you've got to be kidding me. This is a natural disaster. Get every doggone Greyhound bus line in the country and get their asses moving to New Orleans."

What great leadership, and what moronic thinking. The people of New Orleans deserve better than this. So while Nagin was waiting for his Greyhound fleet, the floodwaters swamped his school buses.
