Thailand declares martial law
Terrorism in south prompts military response
As jihadi terrorism in southern Thailand is on the increase, the Fourth Army Region’s command, with the approval of the government in Bangkok, declared martial law in the districts of Chana and Thepha. This move widened the previous military zone in the south, mostly in the nearby southern provinces of Narathiwt Pattani and Yala. The recently imposed martial law is strongly affecting community and business life in the region but the army command insists these measures are necessary to prevent an all-out secessionist Muslim jihad against the predominantly Buddhist Thai nation.. Currently there are some 14 million Muslims out of 66 million Thais.
