What Motivates Islamists?

By David Aikman
Beyond the News

"It has become fashionable, even among Christians, to engage in criticism of Christian broadcaster Pat Robertson. Aside from his identity as a defender of conservative Christian principles, Robertson has sometimes made statements that even some of his supporters disagreed with.

But when the Washington Post recently criticized Robertson for being unreasonable in asserting that Islamist extremists wanted to control the world, he was right and the Post was wrong. Just a few days ago Hamas leader Khaled Mash'al asserted in a Damascus mosque, "Tomorrow, our nation will sit on the throne of the world. This is not a figment of the imagination." By "our nation," of course, Mash'al meant all the world's Muslims.

The Islamists are deadly serious about their global ambitions. We should all pay attention."
