Responding to Iran

By David Aikman
Beyond the News

There's been much media speculation about American military contingency plans to deal with Iran. The existence of contingency plans, however, proves nothing; there are probably contingency plans to invade Iceland, if necessary.

What Americans need to know, however, is that the mullah-led regime in Iran seems bent on defying not just America, but the entire world, in its drive to develop nuclear weapons. It has lied to international inspectors, negotiated dishonestly with the European Union and openly announced its plans to wipe Israel off the map.

The U.S. has been consistent in seeking to get the U.N. Security Council on the record in opposition to Iran's nuclear plans. But it would be foolish indeed for the U.S. to rule out in advance any military options. Diplomacy often works most effectively when backed by real military muscle.
