Our Enemy: Complacency

By Hugh Hewitt
Beyond The News

"Although it has been less than five years since the terrible attack of 9/11, and less than one year since the horrible bombings in London, the memories of these and other Islamist outrages in Bali and Beslan, Madrid and Jerusalem, Jordan and the Netherlands and across the globe seems to be fading. A large slice of America seems to be embracing the "lucky shot" theory of 9/11 and to be growing comfortable again in the appearance of peace.

This complacency is dangerous and invites more and even more lethal attacks. Recent stories detail the decentralization of terror and the use of the web to organize independent al Qaeda cells. Recruitment by the most violent for the most violent acts continues.

Against this backdrop the debates about national security surveillance pale in seriousness. The Congress of the United States should stop grandstanding on surveillance issues and join the effort to educate the public on the continuing threats."
