Bhutto's Assasination & 2008
The assassination of Benazir Bhutto is a moment of great sadness for the world, and also of renewed clarity. Twice serving as the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Mrs. Bhutto gave her life in the cause of democratic freedom, an anathema to Islamist radicals. She was also a symbol of a Muslim country embracing equal rights for women--another source of hatred among the terrorists.
The clarity comes from the recognition that terrorists retain the capacity to undermine governments and unleash instability, especially in Pakistan, which is a nuclear power with as many as 90 nuclear weapons. Suddenly the presidential contest in the U.S. is focused exactly where it ought to have been for the entire past year: On the issue of which candidate would be the best commander-in-chief?--which has the most experienced hand at running a vast and incredibly complicated war that will go on throughout the next eight years?
We grieve the loss of Mrs. Bhutto, and hope for more leaders of her resolve and vision.
