Putin's Crude Power Play

By David Aikman

You may have been following this strange news from Russia. President Putin, who has served two terms as president, is barred from the constitution from running again in March, 2008. But that hasn't stopped him from remaining in power, how's that?

Well, he's picked a protege Dmitri Medvedev, to run for President instead. Once Medvedev's won the election and there is certainty in today's Russia, he'll appoint Putin as Prime Minister, and then the Prime Minister will give orders instead of the President. Is this a crude power play? You bet, but it could go badly wrong.

What if Medvedev, rejects instructions from Putin, technically his junior? What if Putin's colleagues won't take orders from Putin's puppet? Things could get interesting; Russia's a very peculiar place.
