Teen jobs are going to illegal immigrants

By Charles Zehren / Newsday

The uncomfortable reality, as Andrew Sum sees it, is that there's a direct link between the steep national decline in teen employment rates and the growing practice of businesses hiring illegal immigrants and paying them off the books.

Sum is the director of the Center for Labor Market Studies at Northeastern University and lead author of a widely cited nationwide study projecting teen employment will continue to fall, with a drop to 36.7 percent this summer from 45 percent in 2000. That puts it at or near its lowest level since the data series began in 1948, despite a strengthening economy and improving overall labor market.

``The immigrant increase in employment is overwhelming. Every net new job created is taken by an immigrant. I know that's shocking, but that's the truth,'' Sum said offering his sober assessment. ``It happened in Massachusetts and New York in the 1990s, and now its happening in the country as a whole.'' • So much for the silly argument that illegal Mexicans just do the work that Americans won't. Which argument, by the way, wouldn't be true even if it were accurate. The wages for those jobs would simply go up to the extent that the market would bare. To the extent that the market would not bare, then consumption of the end product would go down. Either way, the result would be the cost of security. What, you think it or anything else is free? But then the Left never has understood the free market nor private enterprise have they?

  • No, they have no understanding of, nor appreciation of capitalism and free markets. Socialism is what they long for; and that they don't understand either; for if they did, they would know it does not work.

  • Ah yes, but we have already established that the Left does not abandon policies just because they do not work, (see second comment re: "You are all to blame.............". This is just another example.

It is the intent that counts don't ya know, and since they are the good guys with stellar intent then their policies must be adhered to regardless of results and if you don't agree then you are mean spirited with bad intentions.

  • Mean spirited? You mean as in hateful, bigoted, racist, homophobic, judgemental, and moralistic?

  • Exactly! THEY are not being judgemental, mind you, because,..., well because, you see, ah...., because they are right,..., oops, I mean they are correct and they are the good guys and their intentions are good and their hearts are pure.

'Moral Relativism': The notion whereby the Left presumes to be morally superior by declaring that there is no such thing as moral superiority.

  • "Have you ever found in history, one single example of a Nation thoroughly corrupted that was afterwards restored to virtue?...And without virtue, there can be no political liberty....
--John Adams writing to Thomas Jefferson

Heavy says, "This is what moral relativism brings."

By Blogger HeavyHanded, at 10:14 AM

  • Quite so. Your point on ‘moral relativism’ leading to the corruption that concerned Adams is well taken. ‘ Moral relativism’ is first and foremost a corruption of logic which then inevitably leads to the corruption of mind and spirit.

Actually, I would like to restate my definition to the way I usually word it. (The meaning is the same but it rolls off the tongue smoother and better highlights the contradiction.)

‘Moral relativism is the means by which the Left presumes to occupy the moral high ground by declaring that there is no such thing.’

Not only is it a corruption of logic but that corruption is then abused by the Left. It is one thing to point out, correctly I believe, that there are complex situations in which reasonable, intelligent and well meaning people may disagree as to the moral direction that should be taken. It is quite another to then say that I must accept any hair-brained opinion as being as good as any other. That is a corruption of logic as in ‘Some Yoodles are Meezlics; you are a Yoodle, therefore you are a Meezlic.’ The abuse comes from the Left then taking their adherence to that corrupt logic as immunizing them from its dictates. Maddening! ‘All opinions are equal; if your opinion is otherwise then my opinion is better.’ Rather like their interpretation of free speech being their right to shout down, muzzle or even throw pies in the face of anyone with whom they disagree.
