A Message We Cannot Afford to Send

By Hugh Hewitt
Beyond The News

As the U.S. and the permanent members of the Security Council plus Germany gather in London this week to consider the response to the Iranian rush to nuclear weapons, they should carefully consider the price of inaction by the League of Nations in the 1930s. At every provocation from Hitler or Mussolini, the League and its members did little or nothing, and with each victory, the fascists took additional security that the democracies would never stand in their way.

Now the mullahs of Iran and their increasingly global oriented and media-savvy President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad are drawing dangerous conclusions about the U.N. and the willingness of its most powerful members to stop their nuclear ambitions. Another set of weak responses will telegraph to Tehran the message they have been receiving for years: Full speed ahead. No one will stop you.

This is a message we cannot afford to send.

  • Very well said and very sad indeed. Our world bodies have done nothing to help when the world truly is in crisis.

When you stop and think about it, a greater part of the world is backward, totalitarian or Dictatorial. It is no wonder why you can't get anything done. How can we expect a good quality decision and the will to back it up when they know that they could be next?
It's like watching children fight in the school yard and you have to get an adult to step in a stop it. Far to often we are left in the adult role and the spoiled brats don't like it.
