Iraqis: life is getting better
MOST Iraqis believe life is better for them now than it was under Saddam Hussein, according to a British opinion poll published today.
The survey of more than 5,000 Iraqis found the majority optimistic despite their suffering in sectarian violence since the American-led invasion four years ago this week.

Peanuts' for Petraeus
"To understand why the Founders put Presidents in charge of war fighting, look no further than the supplemental war spending bill now moving through the House. Everybody's a four-star in Congress's Army, and every general wants his own command, especially if it includes cash for the troops, er, campaign contributors. Too bad none of this bears any relation to what real General David Petraeus is trying to accomplish in Iraq." Keep reading Peanuts' for Petraeus.

5 Things Republicans Can Learn From The Democrats
We might as well change the Republican Party symbol from an elephant to a punching bag because the Republican wimps in DC just refuse to fight back. The base may have no qualms about going after liberals, but when we look for Republican pols on the Hill to show some leadership in this area, we're almost always sadly disappointed.
Shooting itself in the foot again
As in previous cases, most famously the response to Hurricane Katrina, basic competence seems to be a problem here. Congressional Democrats, no doubt, will go overboard and end up claiming the firings were illegal, which is nonsense, but the administration has basically handed them the issue.
Attorney General Alberto Gonzales speaks during a news conference at the Justice Department in Washington, Tuesday, March 13, 2007. A Senate Republican is calling for Attorney General Alberto Gonzales' dismissal as Democrats weigh subpoenaing President Bush's top aides in the escalating political furor over the firing of eight federal prosecutors.
There is nothing wrong with removing political appointees from office at any time, even...." More.
Journalists should be held to account for deceptive reporting of U.S. Attorney firings
"Last week watching the coverage of the Libby verdict I wondered how it was possible for so many in the media to completely ignore Joe Wilson’s credibility problems in their reporting. This week, I was even more perplexed watching the media cover the story of the Bush Justice Department firing of eight U.S. Attorneys. How is it so many in the mainstream media think they can get away with deceiving their audience by ignoring the 1993 firings of 93 U.S. Attorneys by Bill Clinton?"
By Rich Galen
As part of the "New Era of Cooperation in Washington" which was promised by the Democrats in the run-up to the elections last November, we are now embroiled in one of the sillier offenses against Democracy. The Los Angeles Times' "Primer on US Attorneys" quotes the US Code as saying: "Each United States attorney is subject to removal by the President." Really? Hmmm. Someone should tell Senators Patrick Leahy (Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee), Chuck Schumer (Chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee) and Barbara Boxer (Deputy Chair of the DSCC)...
Commentary
"The debate over the US military's engagement on the Iraqi battlefield is raging on Capitol Hill with congressional Democrats attempting to defund the campaign through back-channel means.
Simultaneously, reports are coming from a multitude of sources -- both inside and outside of Iraq -- that testify to the overwhelming success, to date, of President Bush's 'surge' initiative. Why are our elected officials wasting taxpayer dollars, allocated in the form of their salaries, to debate turning a victory into a defeat?
Anti-war activists, the mainstream media and liberal Democrats like Harry Reid, David Obey and Ted 'Hope Floats' Kennedy are no strangers to ripping defeat from the jaws of victory. A perfect example of this can be found in the Vietnam War where politicians interfered with the generals to literally hand the Communist North Vietnamese a victory." Read on.
Immigrant Rights Activists Plan May Day Boycott -- 03/16/2007
In recent months, federal authorities have arrested hundreds of illegal immigrants in raids on businesses that employ them.
Critics of the crackdown say lawmakers must 'approve fair and pro-immigrant, pro-workers immigration reform and end the terror launched by the Bush administration on immigrant communities nationwide.' "

KSM's World War
What his confession says about our enemy--and us.
"In Cairo last year, Deputy Supreme Guide of the Muslim Brotherhood Mohammed Habib told us that the 9/11 attacks were 'great crimes,' but that he doubted Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda were responsible. It's probably too much to expect that Khalid Sheikh Mohammed's confession that he 'was responsible for the 9/11 operation from A to Z' will sway minds like Mr. Habib's. But for the rest of us, the testimony by bin Laden's top operational lieutenant is a jolting re-education in the enemy we face.

The Art of Opposition
Will the White House now stop underestimating the Democratic Congress?
BY KIMBERLEY A. STRASSEL
If President Bush is looking for an early Christmas present for his top Justice appointees, he could do worse than Sun Tzu's 'The Art of War.' Attorney General Alberto Gonzales's edition might even be unabridged.
Call the administration's handling of the eight fired U.S. attorneys what you will (and many adjectives come to mind), at bottom this is a story of a White House and Justice Department that have yet to understand how rocked is their world. Their GOP brethren are no longer running Congress, and the Democrats who took over want blood. The administration made its first, costly, mistake by underestimating the opposition.
Democrats can't be accused of the same naivete. They understood on Nov. 8 that their real majority power would rest in investigations and the almighty subpoena." Read on.

Prescription for Bias
McCain's Mistake
The upcoming election involves fateful choices--the most significant race since 1980. McCain is a serious statesman who has courageously and consistently stood up against Islamo-Nazi terror, Congressional corruption, run-away entitlements and wasteful federal spending. Why, then, choose to begin a campaign about values and national survival with an appearance on a silly, late-night comedy show?
McCain's decision looks especially misguided when combined with his refusal to address the Conservative Political Action Conference. All other Republican candidates spoke to CPAC, but McCain didn't want to "pander" to conservatives. Instead, he pandered to David Letterman and his audience, who don't count as likely backers of McCain--or any other Republican." -- Michael Medved

Gay Sheep Gaining Their Rights
Townhall.com
"Have you heard about the research into gay sheep? The U.S. Sheep Experiment Station has been studying the sexual preferences of sheep. It turns out that a certain percentage of male sheep prefer other male sheep--and do not breed with female sheep.
The scientists have been looking for a biological cause for this pattern and they discovered that the brains of 'gay' sheep are more like the brains of female sheep in some respects. Furthermore, they believe that the sexual preference of sheep might be reversed by treatments.
This has both animal rights activists and gay rights activists in an uproar. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals--or 'PETA'--has called for the experiments to be halted, and tennis star Martina Navratilova argued that sheep have a 'right' to be gay. No kidding. Who knew that controversy would erupt over the sexual preferences of sheep? What is next? The rights of transsexual chipmunks?" (Emphasis mine - HH)

For the second time in the last few months, Barack Obama -- touted as a politician who floats above the culture of corruption -- has found himself at the center of an ethics controversy. Obama has tried to distance himself from Hillary Clinton, his main competition for the Democratic nomination. But as far as ethics is concerned, developments suggest he may be more like Hillary than he, or his backers, would care to admit…

The Democrats must pay off their left-wing, which helped them become a majority party for the first time in a dozen years. Leaders in both the House and Senate have come up with bills that would impose timetables on the president’s request for another $100 billion to fight the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The question is, is this good politics? Clearly the effort is to micro-manage the wars via the Congress...
